5-HTP (5-hydroxy L-tryptophan) is a naturally occurring intermediate metabolite between the amino acid L-tryptophan and serotonin. 5-HTP is extracted from the seed of an African plant (Griffonia simplicifolia). 5-HTP is converted in the brain to serotonin, a neurotransmitter substance found at the junctions (synapses) between neurons. Thus, 5-HTP supports healthy level of serotonin in the body.
