Bromelain from pineapple is a mixture of protein-digesting enzymes called proteases. Pineapples have had a long medical tradition among the natives of South America and spread worldwide for various uses in folk medicine and continues to be explored as a popular herbal extract.

Bromelain can be used to treat a number of conditions, but it is particularly effective in reducing inflammation from tendinitis, sprains and strains, and other minor muscle injuries.

Bromelain aids digestion, guards against harmful, diarrhea-causing bacteria, and reduces inflammation in people with inflammatory bowel disorders. It also helps the body break down and digest proteins.
