CLA stands for conjugated linoleic acid which is a naturally occurring omega-6 fatty acid that has several health benefits. CLA is known for its capabilities to reduce body fat deposits and improve immune function.
Conjugated linoleic acid is an isomer of linoleic acid and is a type of Omega-6 fatty acid. In fact, there are at least 28 different types of isomers of linoleic acid. They vary by the arrangement of the double bonds in the linoleic acid molecule and are found preferentially in dairy products and meat. It is uncommon to separate individual isomers and thus CLA actually refers to a mixture of the different forms of linoleic acid.
The main dietary sources of CLA are animal foods from ruminants, such as whole milk, butter, beef, and lamb. However, there are also several plant-based foods that contain conjugated linoleic acid, such as safflower oil and sunflower oil. The supplements typically contain CLA derived from the latter source.
Although CLA is primarily known for helping with weight loss by reducing body fat levels and increasing metabolic rate, it contains antioxidants and other components that provide other health benefits as well. It is a potent anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogen, and anti-catabolite, as well as a powerful immune system enhancer. Conjugated linoleic acid is also used for limiting food allergy reactions.
