Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from the stem of the pineapple plant that has protein-digesting properties. When taken with food, bromelain helps your body break down protein and aids digestion. Bromelain may also reduce swelling, bruising, healing time, and pain after surgeries and physical injuries.
When bromelain is taken between meals, it may help to support joint comfort and help to relieve temporary soreness that is associated with muscle overuse. Laboratory studies show that bromelain reduces the levels of substances that cause inflammation from arthritis.
